A transparent look at how KISS sustains one of the world's largest fully residential educational ecosystems for tribal children.
At Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), financial management is guided by a simple principle: ensuring that every child has access to education, care, and opportunity—free of cost.
What began in 1993 with just 125 students has grown into one of the largest fully residential educational ecosystems for tribal children in the world. Today, over 40,000 students from 64 tribes, including 13 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), are supported across KISS campuses and satellite centres.
Sustaining this scale requires a carefully structured and deeply collaborative financial model.
Total Income (2024–25): ₹149.65 Crores
KISS is sustained through a unique model of institutional support, community contribution and partnerships.
The remaining requirement is supported through institutional reserves.
Total Recurring Expenditure (2023–24): ₹140.72 Crores
These funds sustain the everyday functioning of a fully residential ecosystem, ensuring that 40,000+ students are supported not just in learning, but in living, growing and preparing for the future.
They support:
Classrooms, teaching resources, skill-building and holistic development.
Daily meals, safe accommodation and essential living support for every student.
The people who guide, teach, mentor and care for students every day.
Maintenance of hostels, classrooms, utilities and essential services.
Healthcare, counselling, sports, life skills and personal growth.
The actual cost of running KISS extends beyond direct expenditure.
Fee waivers for KISS students pursuing professional courses at KIIT.
Support services including faculty, transport, healthcare, and infrastructure maintenance.
At KISS, financial management is not just about sustaining an institution — it is about sustaining lives, at scale.
In addition to operational support, KIIT contributed towards infrastructure development and expansion.
This ensures that facilities continue to grow alongside the needs of students.
Behind every number is a life in motion.
This is not just a financial system — it is a support structure that holds together 40,000 individual journeys, every single day.
Not as a one-time opportunity, but as a continuous, fully supported journey — from early education to professional pathways.
Students are not just enrolled; they are supported, mentored, and guided through every stage of learning.
Nutrition, healthcare, safe housing, mentorship, and cultural grounding — everything required for a child to grow with dignity.
From classrooms to careers in medicine, engineering, governance, sports, and research — students move into spaces once out of reach.
When students go back as professionals, educators, and leaders, the change does not remain individual — it becomes collective.
At its core, this financial structure is not just about sustaining an institution — it is about ensuring that no child's future is limited by their circumstances.
